Shabby Elegance Decor Adds Charm and Romance

Shabby chic decor has really come around during the last decade. This is probably because of the low cost involved, the ability to create the look with furniture you already have, and the general unpretentious and relaxed feeling achieved with this style of decor. It is also beautiful and charming.

Classical shabby chic decor involves a very clean and uncluttered look. Furniture, curtains and floors are normally all light in color, with very few rugs on the bare floors. Walls, window treatments and pictures are kept to the very lightest of shades, with white and off-white being the central theme. Accents and knick knacks should be very minimal. This style is all about the light, airy feel.

If you like a Victorian atmosphere, shabby chic works well in this type of decor also. When using this style, use more patterns on your walls, such as a light floral or lace pattern wallpaper or border. Richer colors may be used in window treatments such as curtains, sheers and valances. Stick to light colors, but use pale greens, pinks and beige. A plaid sofa using these very pale colors is absolutely charming when used in Victorian shabby elegance. Distressed finish floor lamps and chandeliers look wonderful with the Victorian style as well.

Now we come to my favorite, country shabby chic. Here you can use just about anything you like, as long as you stay away from dark colors and don't have too much clutter - this takes away from the airy atmosphere. Quilts, folk art, and wicker are some of the accents used in this style. Delicate floral wall pictures surrounded by a straw matte are the perfect touch! Accents such as wooden angel or flower figurines add to the charm as well. Toss a pastel country quilt over the back of a rocking chair and you have one of the most romantic looks imaginable.

No matter what type of shabby chic is your favorite, furnishings are always relaxed, sometimes overstuffed and never formal. Depending on which style you use, your sofa can be anything from a delicate floral to a nubby neutral. Rattan rocking chairs, distressed finish tables, anything antique or worn looking is perfect.

Don't be afraid to mix and match many styles together as one. One of the best things about shabby chic decor is that it is eclectic, so matching all of your furniture and accents isn't necessary. And that's a wonderful thing! Make your living room a welcome, charming and romantic place everyone loves - and you don't have to spend much cash to do it!
